Baby Teeth and Others to Perform at Benefit for Dill Pickle Food Co-op

The opening-its-doors-oh-so-soon Dill Pickle Food Co-op jubilantly announces the line-up for its upcoming benefit concert at the AV-aerie. On Friday, February 27, 2009, Baby Teeth, Tim Kinsella, and Willis P. Jenkins, will grace the stage all in the name of the Dill Pickle. These live sets will be followed by a late night dance party (from about 11:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.) deejayed by Damon Locks of the Eternals. The gracious donation of time and talent by these great Chicago artists will give this Logan Square-based food co-op needed financial momentum before its opening, expected by the end of this Spring.

The benefit is at the AV-aerie, located at 2000 W. Fulton, on Friday, February 27, 2009, and will be open to all ages. There will be a suggested donation of $12 for admission. There will also be a donation bar for people with a valid photo ID. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

Soup and Bread: Winter Wednesdays at the Hideout

Chicago 6 Corners had grand plans to use its time and this space to report on the Social Workers of Illinois Advocacy Day that is happening today, and around this time every year, down in Springfield, but mixed messages on departure time meant this reporter missed the bus. Instead, for your consideration, here is but another example of Chicago citizens applying their creative "stock" to a worthy cause.

Soup and Bread is a weekly winter fundraising event hosted by the Hideout, to which three guest cooks--local chefs and soup hobbyists--bring their tastebud-pleasing concoctions. Pass-the-hat donations go directly to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, which could use some extra help after the salmonella peanut butter epidemic forced the organization to discard a large share of recent food donations.

Tonight's featured soup chefs include Cinnamon Cooper and Robyn Nisi, who write tasty foodie blogs under the Drive-Thru crew umbrella on Gapers Block; Columbia College film professor Dan Rybicky; and dietician Bettina Tahsin. Tonight's bread is lovingly provided by Food on the Dole's writer and chef Hugh Amano. Join the queue between 5 and 6 p.m.

If you can't make it tonight, never fear, Soup and Bread Wednesdays are scheduled to continue through April 1st. OR you can cherry-pick your favorite soup recipes from the guest cooks on Hideout bartender Martha Bayne's weekly Soup and Bread blog. Bon appetite!

Out of Sight, But Hardly out of Sound: Quennect 4 on Friday

In my inbox today came my umpteenth invite to Quennect 4, Humboldt's simmering underground hot-spot for "music/noise/analog/digital/art/doodles/dance/seizures." I've added myself to their email blasts. I've ruminated over their myspace photo and flyer montage of parties missed. My roommate invited me to some jams Saturday (I stayed in). The buzz is bin-worthy. And still I neglect my funked up opportunities 1.7 miles away.

No longer – as friends in Zhu Blue Shift were that particular e-invite, and their hip-hop experimentalism will suffice for this Friday, or any Friday for that matter. Zhu Blue Shift's Brainemo Thump and cohorts should drop bombs for one hour starting @ 8:30ish. Canadian Biker Ladies Down Shift to Chicago, Handlebar

Almost four years ago a talented and driven group of writers, photographers, designers, artists and bikers relaunched a magazine for pedal-powered people in Vancouver, BC. Soon after, in true grassroots fashion, they asked people here to write stories and send photos about Chicago bike haunts, such as Handlebar and Cal Liquors. The magazine grew (both online and physically), distribution extended beyond Canada, to several cities in the States. Then it showed up in Chicago – free and widely available thanks to distribution by local gear-heads like T.C. O'Rourke.  

And this week, you can meet, drink, chat bike history, and talk about bike collaborations (hey, you too can write stories and get published in 14 North American cities) with the publisher, Amy Walker, and reps from Momentum Magazine. Or as Amy put it:

Elysian Ball: Erotic Festivities at Recession-induced Reduced Cost

The recession is officially in, let the deals begin! Our friends at UNSCENE, interviewed last month here, informed us that $20 pre-sale tickets are available for students and teachers (ticket price breakdown here) for a "modern interpretation of a classic speakeasy event." With erotic-based performances, video art, photography, fashion exhibits, dance, and – this is interesting – "aerials," it has the makings for a leather-and-pleather-load of pre-V-day fun.
